What is the Target Market?: 

PRV performance has a propitious niche for four-cylinder engines for three reasons. First, the size, construction material, weight, and complexity of PRV are approximately the same as a conventional manifold for an in-line engine. Second, the PRV cost is approximately the same as a conventional manifold. Third, the benefits of PRV -- improved fuel economy, increased engine torque, and lower emissions -- are provided to the automaker at no additional cost. PRV can also be designed for V6 or V8 engines. However, two sets of PRV manifold are required for any V-engine configuration. Consequently, the cost advantage of PRV is lost for V-configured engines. The propitious niche for PRV performance is illustrated in Figure 8. The propitious niche exists because (1) PRV can compete as a differentiated product, (2) PRV has a cost advantage for the four-cylinder automobile market relative to direct injection, and (3) PRV Performance is the only company capable of satisfying the demand for variab

Sales/Marketing Strategy: 

The initial product launch phase will require a strategic approach to increase the acceptance of the disruptive technology offered by PRV Performance. Specifically, strategic alliances must be formed with global engine laboratories to promote rapid acceptance of PRV to automakers throughout the world. The strategic alliance will serve two functions. First, the engine laboratories will be funded to prepare a commercial-ready product. Second, the engine laboratories will be paid a commission to sell PRV to their clients.

Ten prototypes have been driven and tested for over 25,000 miles. Steady state highway fuel economy has improved 21% and city highway has improved 10%. Dynamometer testing demonstrated a 17% increase in torque.

Describe in detail the technology used in the Project - Address the innovation in significant detail : 

The power of a spark ignited engine is directly related to the mass of air flowing into the cylinders. A conventional throttle (refer to Figure 1) regulates the air flow into the engine by imparting a non-recoverable pressure loss upstream of the engine. The throttle plate operates by suffocating the engine’s airflow; the throttled engine cannot breathe, and therefore delivers less power. The work required to overcome the vacuum created by throttle plate wastes fuel and reduces the engine efficiency. Consequently, throttle plates are highly effective -- but highly inefficient -- throttling devices.

To overcome the inefficiency of the throttle plate, a variable area Venturi has been developed, patented, designed, and tested. The resulting design is a Venturi induction system, whereby the Venturi area is varied by an axial moving pintle. Engine throttling is accomplished by changing the area of the Venturi rather than imparting an unrecoverable pressure loss.
