This being a small initial round and merely a proof-of-concept, future rounds will be of much greater stature in reaching full scale production.
Our initial customer will be anyone who currently owns a residential pool, as retrofitting is very simple and effective. Any pool owner can appreciate something that eliminates a substantial part of the cost of managing a pool. As California's second largest consumer of electricity in the residential sector, swimming pools can greatly benefit from using that energy more efficiently.
A pool owner is victim to large utility costs and an industry soaked in outdated, inefficient technology. Improving on these inadequacies has become a significant market in recent years. Examples of this market are supplemental water treatment devices designed to alleviate the chemical and electrical demand of pool water: Ozone generators, ultraviolet disinfection, chlorine generators, and heavy metal ionizers are all built by numerous manufacturers. Yet none of these methods are a standalone remedy; they are merely supplemental and add capital cost of owning a pool as well as complications of managing it.
The target market will be new and existing residential pools. This technology can be retrofitted to ponds as well, opening an infinite amount of potential business.

It will be left in the hands of a smaller scale company to implement a revolutionary concept if the market is ever to see progress. Now more than ever, consumers are progressive-minded and care how the products they buy affect the environment. In the residential pool market, such ecologically friendly products can also be extremely cost effective because of greater efficiency.
The basis of our device covers two necessary aspects of water purification: filtration and oxidation. Pool filters today sacrifice efficiency for ease of maintenance, or vice versa. Oxidation is usually chlorine-based and supplemented chemically by flocculants, chelators, algaecides, clarifiers, polyquats, or by means of a device like ozone generators, UV lamps, etc. Our device instead uses a form of photocatalytic oxidation, needing only sunlight to work. The product of PCO is the hydroxyl radical, far more potent than ozone or pure chlorine as an oxidizer with ZERO exposure hazard. This is because the halflife of OH- is milliseconds in water, meaning it is destroyed nearly the moment it is created. Ozone and chlorine, on the other hand, can create respiratory hazards.
Photocatalytic oxidation is an emerging technology, first applied in a mass scale in air purification for the suppression of the SARS virus. Today the potency and efficiency of PCO reactors makes it a very attractive alternative to more energy intensive methods.
The biggest challenge for any great stride of innovation will be its acceptance. It is for this reason we wish to implement the technology on a small scale in an industry easy to demonstrate its benefits. The market is substantial enough to provide a more than sufficient boost into other industries once demonstrated as a success.
Initial funding will be for prototype development. Once desired performance is achieved, a small-scale real world pilot program will be implemented. These tasks are the bulk of the project, whose purpose will be to showcase the technology and provide a seed for further development, implementation into other similar industries, and full scale execution of prototype.
