OnGreen, the online clearinghouse for cleantech, is looking for a Business Consultant to facilitate market entry to China for two U.S. firms.

As covered in TechCrunch, VentureBeat and other top publications, OnGreen is a venture-backed, White House-cited, LA-based, cricket-playing, overworking, Turntable.fm-addicted start-up that drives partners and capital to the most promising clean technologies and companies globally and transforms today’s environmental challenges into future economic advancement.  OnGreen also has offices in Shanghai.

We create partnerships as well as funding.  In our August China Roadshow, OnGreen matched 19 U.S. cleantech companies with over 150 Chinese companies in 4 events across Shanghai, Nanjin, TaiCang and Suzhou.   A number of MOUs have already come out of that trip, and we are including some of those U.S. companies in another Roadshow in December, which will also include Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Some of our U.S. firms have engaged OnGreen to further assist with market entry into China, including project scoping, market research, analysis, strategy, business development and possible plant siting. We are looking for a Consultant to assist OnGreen in running these entry projects.  The position will be on a contract or contract-to-hire based on the final scope of the projects.

The ideal candidate will have the following:
  • 10+ years doing similar foreign market entry projects, preferably China.
  • In-China experience and contacts greatly preferred.  If you don’t have these, you need to demonstrate sterling track record of managing process in unfamiliar markets.
  • Cleantech experience greatly preferred.  Here too, if you don’t know cleantech, you need to show you’ve done market entry projects in unfamiliar industries.
  • Excellent project management skills.  Creating and sticking to a project plan, badgering other contributors, making regular progress reports.  This needs to be something you did yourself in past projects, not delegated.
  • Ability to create physical deliverables.  Again, you’re the one generating or at least editing and aggregating research reports, briefings, presentations, models, et al, so pure thought leaders and relationship managers need not apply.
  • Ability to travel to China and New York.  Up to 1-2 trips/month.
  • Agility to roll with change.  We’re an efficient, focused start-up – but a start-up all the same, with all the crazy twists, turns and drama that entails.  The more prior experience you have with a client like us, the better.
  • Great online skills.  We use Google Docs, Skype and activeCollab to manage projects.  You need to be familiar with these online tools or demonstrate proficiency with others so that these won’t be your first.
  • Los Angeles address.  Need to plug into OnGreen team/flow.  Might make it work from Shanghai.  Elsewhere, we’d require you to pay for your own travel and accommodations for extended periods in LA.

Compensation:  salary + stock options, based on experience

If you are interested, please send an email to: careers@ongreen.com with the following:

  • Description of past projects qualifying you for these two
  • Hourly rate.  Include rates from last two jobs, as well as your target range here.
  • References (we won’t contact w/o your approval)
  • Sample work product.  Reports, decks, models where you created at least ½ the content yourself.  If these are sensitive or you want to wait to share, that’s ok, but if you have good product and share it in your initial response, you’re more likely to hear from us.

More about the company:
OnGreen is a online/offline network connecting the worlds best cleantech innovators with investors and partners from around the world.   We use our website, personal network and matching events to bring together key players in the fragmented global Green Economy.

The process starts with our website, www.ongreen.com, where companies post standardized profiles and funding requests and then network with investors, experts and other industry leaders who can help them grow their business.   We have organized the Green Economy into 240 specific categories, so we are able to match members based on their particular niche and interests.

We’ve made good progress since launching in July 2010.  Here are some key success metrics.

  • 300+ companies posting funding requests from 35 countries.
  • 70,000 Cleantech patents categorized and searchable in our database.
  • US$2.2 billion in total funding requests.
  • 18,000 unique visitors per month.
  • 50% investor contact rate – 2-3 contacts per company.
  • 10 demo and /or matching events in last 12 months.
  • First 2-3 fundings expected by November.

We work with federal and local governments to facilitate Cleantech development.

Helped by our Shanghai-based investors, we have established OnGreen as a bridge between Chinese capital and foreign (mainly U.S.) innovation.  Recent highlights:

  • ·August 2011:  Led 19 U.S., Canadian and European entrepreneurs on China Capital Roadshow, matching them with 60+ potential investors and partners in Shanghai, Nanjing and Suzhou.  1 partner MOU so far, 4-5 pending.

  • April: several OnGreen start-ups pitched a delegation of investors from the Zhejiang province at UCLA’s Office of Intellectual Property.
  • March: investors from Jiangsu province viewed demos by start-ups at OnGreen’s launch party at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood.
  • February: OnGreen opened a Shanghai office and hosted a cleantech networking event with 110 entrepreneurs, investors and other industry stakeholders.
