Business

Business Overview:

To capitalize on the rising market of renewable energy forms the founders of EcoWind have spent the last 3 years developing a new generation wind power turbine. The development costs that supersede 4 Million USD have been funded by the founders as well as by the Finnish government. Today the products of EcoWind 2kW and EcoWind 4kW wind power turbines are ready for mass production and the founders hold all IPR of the development.

Project Type:
Industry:
Project Location:
Sarasota, FL, 34231
United States
What is the Target Market?:

For the last ten years worldwide wind turbine sales have grown approximately 29% annually. Wind power is now the world's fastest growing source of energy. For the next twenty years it is expected to expand at double-digit rates. In 2008, 25,000 megawatts (MW) of turbines where installed bringing worldwide capacity to 120,000 MW. Modern wind turbines are selling for around $1.5 million per MW. At the price, over $100 billion in wind turbine technology is expected to be sold in 2013.

The US Dept. of Energy, the American Wind Energy Association the National Renewable Energy Laboratory believe that 20% of the nation's electricity can come from renewable wind energy within the next twenty years. This would result in cumulative U.S. wind turbine sales of over $250 billion.

How big is the Target Market in terms of Annual Sales?:
> $50B
Sales/Marketing Strategy:

EcoWind will partner both locally and globally with current reseller and installers of renewable energy products. There are already several companies in every country and in every US state who act as resellers for residential wind turbines. EcoWind will not have any direct sales to the final customer.

Provide use cases :

EcoWind Grid
• High quality three-phase current
• Grid voltage is 230 V / 50 Hz (three-phase) in accordance
with Standard EN50160
• Dimensions of the control unit 800 x 800 x 350 (mm)
• Connection to 3 x 16 A fuse

EcoWind Heat
• For heating
• Energy is stored in the water mass of the water boiler as heat
• Dimensions of the control unit 600 x 800 x 350 (mm)
• Connection to EcoWind-resistor

EcoWind Charge
• For island and off-grid operation
• Battery voltage 12 V, 24 V or 48 V

Competition:

There are numerous wind turbine manufacturers across the globe. The Chinese have been pushing different products out on the market but many of them do not work properly giving the wind turbine business a bad name. The largest manufacturer of residential 2-4 kW wind turbines in the US is Southwest windpower who produces the SkyStreamer product. The sales of the SkyStreamer has exceeded 100 thousand units indicating that the market is growing. It is however unclear how many of these units have been small DC turbines for boats and yachts. Selling EcoWind to one of the larger competitors may also be a possible exit strategy.

Business Model:

The EcoWind products are made for single households as well as wind parks of smaller range. Due to the fact that the US government recently has passed legislations where parties purchasing wind power turbines can get tax deductions of up to 30-40% of the purchase price has EcoWind believing that the wind turbine market will in fact grow very rapidly over the years to come. The time to enter the market and get a foothold for the future growth is right now.

Technology

What makes the technology/business unique and have a defendable competitive advantage?:

• low cut-in wind speed
• high efficiency
• Lightweight
• Weather-resistant
• Electricity production is not stopped even at high wind speeds
• Power is limited by passive pitch angle control
• Downwind rotor, no rudder
• No servomotors or sensors
• Low service requirements

Blades
• Manufactured of Telene®-composite plastic via reaction injection molding technique (RIM)
• At the wind speed of 25 m/s the fatigue limit of the blades is fourfold and the breaking limit 20-fold compared to the maximum stress caused by the wind (static pressure)

Generator
Axial-flux permanent magnet generator
• High efficiency and steady performance
• Cost and energy efficient production
• Integrated, compact design
• No carbon brushes, no sparking
• Long service interval
• Lightweight

Nominal values of the generator
• Power (Pn) 2,0 kW / 4,0 kW
• Phase current (In) 3,5 A / 7,1 A
• Line-to-line voltage (Un) 380 V
• Open circuit voltage 480 V
• Rotation speed 250 rpm

Describe in detail the technology used in the Project - Address the innovation in significant detail :

The EcoWind wind power solution has 3 distinctive advantages to current wind turbine manufacturers:

1. Automatic angle change of rotor blades: This enables the turbine to work at optimal level even at low wind speeds. It also enables maximum capacity at very high wind speeds without having to shut down.

2. Single speed rotation: The EcoWind wind turbine spins at a constant speed regardless of the wind speed. This is achieved by automatically changing the internal resistance of the turbine. The main benefit of single rotation speed is that the turbine is very silent and the durability of a slow rotating turbine far exceeds that of a variable speed-rotating turbine.

3. High efficiency: The EcoWind turbine exceeds all current wind turbines in power output per wind speed.

With several live test sites under the belt EcoWind can show a proven track record of an efficient and working product

Patent Numbers (Filed/Approved):

Once sufficient capital has been raised EcoWind will seek global patents for certain methods that have been developed.

Amount Sought:
$3,000,000
If raising funds, what shall the funds be used for?:

EcoWind seeks capital to set-up mass production of wind turbine production. The past 3 years the team has been developing the products of 2kW and 4kW wind turbines. The company has superseded the beta phase in testing and has some 20 installations up and running.

EcoWind aims to set-up production plant with needed staffing and tooling as well as sales personnel for creating distribution network. EcoWind will also start developing larger 10 kW and 20 kW wind turbines for larger communities.

Although all the R&D has been made in Finland it is our strong belief that it would be beneficial to set the company up in Florida USA due to the newly passed legislation that allows tax deduction subsidizing on all new wind turbine purchases. Furthermore, our initial clients will most likely be in Chile which also speaks for having the headquarters in Florida.
