When I first turned on the light of my dorm, I saw a little note posted next to the switch: “NYU residence halls use enough electricity each year to power 15,000 American homes! Let’s cut that number.” I was surprised when I know that the students live in the dorms use so much electricity. Fortunately, there is somebody who cares about saving energy and the future of the later generations.
Last night, I watched a video about a girl who addressed a UN meeting on issue of environment on Youtube. Her speech really shocked me because she was only a twelve-year old girl back in 1992 when she gave the speech and yet she could make her points so strong and impressive. She talked about how she was worried about her future because she learned that children were starving, animals were becoming extinct everyday and the environment was getting worse and worse. She said that she used to go fishing with her dad in Vancouver until they found the fish full of cancers. “ If you don’t know how to fix it, please stop breaking it.” What a strong “recommendation” she made to these UN officers who normally just think about business, politics, etc. People buy and through away, as she said. Indeed, I’m a hundred percent agree with her on that. I was born in a well-off family. I don’t have to worry if I don’t have enough to eat or don’t have any clothes to wear. I can get almost whatever I want as long as it is reasonable. I learned that most of the people live in this world, however, are not as lucky as I am. I know that there are a lot of children who can only eat one meal a day and they can’t go to school because they don’t have enough money. On the other hand, I witnessed how adults around me, extravagantly spent their money on catering, parties, etc. When they go out to a restaurant to eat, they order as much food as they can to show their hospitality to the guests even though it is way more food for the number of people. Most of time they don’t pack the food that they didn’t eat, and even if they do, they will just put the food in the fridge until they realize it’s been in the fridge for a long time and they will just through it away.
The waste doesn’t just limit to food. Even the public transportation system in Beijing is well enough for people to go most of the places, rich people still prefer driving everyday because they think it’s too crowded and nasty on either the subway or the bus. The government tried to limit waste and carbon emissions by limiting driving to a few days per week. The regulation is based on the cars' license plate numbers. However, people always have methods to deal with the rules. They buy another car that ends with a different number so they can drive everyday.
What I want to say is that even though people are aware of living sustainable lives, there are still a lot that need us to do.
