DOE Hopes to Create Green Jobs with US-India Research Project

The US Department of Energy selects three research groups to make up the $125m US-India Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Center.

The US Department of Energy has selected three research groups to make up the $125m US-India Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Center.

The three groups, headed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the University of Florida and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will bring together experts from national laboratories, universities, and industry in both the U.S. and India.

The three American groups have partnered with three lead Indian institutions – the Indian Institute of Science-Bangalore, the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology-Hyderabad, and CEPT University-Ahmedabad.

The partners' researchers will leverage their expertise and resources in solar technology, advanced biofuels, and building efficiency to unlock the huge potential of clean energy technologies that can reduce energy use, cut dependence on foreign oil, and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources.

New Study Concludes Renewable Energy Will Create More Jobs Than Fossil Fuels in Virginia

A recent study by George Mason University concludes that 172,000 green jobs can be created in the next 25 years in Virginia by renewable energy projects, compared to 70,000 by fossil fuels.

In a recent study prepared by George Mason University (GMU) of Fairfax, Virginia, for the Virginia Conservation Network, the authors concluded that a renewable energy mix would create 100,000 more jobs than a fossil fuel mix, for the same level of electricity production.

The 2010 Virginia Energy Plan estimates that Virginia's additional need for energy in the next 25 years will increase by a total of 19,448 MW, and that half can be produced by solar, biomass, on-shore wind, and off-shore wind, and the other half by coal and natural gas.

Newsweek's Top "Green" Companies Anything but Green

How wrong can Newsweek be in its list of America's 10 Greenest Companies?

100% Wrong!

If you look at the definition of green jobs by the US Bureau of Labor & Statistics, the Newsweek companies qualify in category "B" (Jobs in which workers' duties involve making their establishment's production processes more environmentally friendly or use fewer natural resources).  Yes, the Newsweek companies have green jobs, but how many? Their number is so tiny compared to the total number of their employees that it's just a joke to call these companies green.

New Green VC Fund Gets US Government Backing

Venture Capital firm SJF Ventures recently announced a new $75 million fund (SJF Ventures III) to be invested in green companies. The fund is the first to receive the SBA "Impact Investment Fund" license.

Is the US Government turning into a venture capitalist, and again trying to pick the winners? Yes and No...

Through the US Small Business Administration (SBA), the government has supplemented the flow of private equity capital and long-term loan funds to small businesses. In FY 2011, the SBA's Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) program provided $2.8 billion of financing to 1,339 U.S. small businesses.

However, the US Government is not picking the winners. The venture capital firms are, and most of them are very good at it.

SJF Ventures is one of them. "After working for 12 years with thousands of entrepreneurial firms and investing in 34 portfolio firms, SJF has built a deep network of experts able to share highly valuable expertise and insight in the firm’s focus areas" says the company's website.
